Pat,
I saw your post on both the Babb and Crocker forums and wondered if you might have any info on a Martha Crocker. My husband's 2nd great grandmother was Martha Ann Crocker who married John Lawrence in January 1860 in Wake Co NC. I have reason to believe that Martha Crocker Lawrence was the same Martha Crocker who was living in the household of John and Penny Crocker in the 1850 Wake Co NC census. Does any of this sound familiar to you? I have worked for a number of years on this family and it has proven very difficult to trace. Any info that you are willing to share would be GREATLY appreciated!! Nancy WilliamsonSubj: Re: John Crocker

Patrick,
As I indicated earlier, my husband Jim's line through his maternal grandfather (LEANDER WILSON) has been very difficult to trace. There are conflicting stories about where he was born and even what his name was! I rather "burned out" after working so intensly on the Lawrence line and decided to take a breather before tackling the Crocker/Babb connection. Seeing your post spurred me on to get going again. I'd appreciate any info on John and Penny Crocker and their children that you are willing to share. The following is what I have been able to piece together. LEANDER WILSON was born 14 February 1876 to ARDELIA LAWRENCE, the daughter of JOHN and MARTHA ANN CROCKER LAWRENCE. By 1883 ARDELIA had married a Mr. Hill and had another child Rosa Hill. On 13 January 1887 ARDELIA LAWRENCE HILL married Thomas J. Wilson in Wake Co NC. They subsequently had an additional four children. Rosa Hill and the man we knew as Leander took the name Wilson, but I have not been able to find any records of a legal adoption. As they lived out from Raleigh in the country, they may have just changed their names, by-passing any legal adoption. MARTHA ANN CROCKER, born about 1832, was the daughter of JOHN and PENNY BABB CROCKER. The info that I have, which came from census records, indicates that they were all born in North Carolina. (I had heard that John Crocker was from Pennsylvania, but no record that I have indicates that.) MARTHA married JOHN (J.A.) LAWRENCE on 18 January 1860 in Wake Co NC. (They are listed in the 1860 Wake Co census as both being age 24.) MARTHA died sometime between 1865 and August 1870 when the 1870 Wake Co census was taken. MARTHA and JOHN LAWRENCE had at least two children: ARDELIA, born in 1860 and JOHN SIDNEY, born in 1865. They are living in the household with their father in the 1870 Wake Co NC census. Living next door with the Wood? family is 22 year old Henry Crocker. In the 1880 Wake Co NC census JOHN SIDNEY (or Sidney John) LAWRENCE age 15 is living in the household of his aunt and uncle, Elijah and Feraby Lawrence Mills. I have been ubable to find either Ardelia, or her father John in the 1880 census. "Family tradition" has them going to Misissippi where Jim's grandfather Leander was born, but I have checked Mississippi records and have not found them. "Family tradition " also gives Leander's last name as Patrick or Kilpatick or Fitzpatrick! I don't know the parents of JOHN LAWENCE, but I do know about his siblings, thanks to the estate papers of his sister Feraby Mills. All the census records for John and his siblings indicate that they were from North Carolina. So if they were from VA, we had some lazy census takers! If you want the info on the Lawrence siblings, let me know. I have lots of questions. Were there any estate papers for John Crocker? How did you find the years of their deaths? How did you discover the Robinson Co TN connection? In one post you mentioned Johnson Co NC. Were they there too? Since you have info on MARTHA's siblings, you may know the identity of the 2 year old girl living in the household with Martha and John Lawrence in the 1860 census. It appears that her name is "Juan Cates". Could she be the daughter of one of Martha's siblings? Hope to hear from you soon. Nancy WilliamsonSAMUEL 1860 JAN 12 NC,WAKE CO CROCKER,MARTHA

Goodspeed's History of Tennessee was originally published in 1886
H.J. Crocker, of Orlinda, is a son of John Crocker, and was born in Wake County, N. C., September 26, 1823.
His father was born in the Keystone State in 1788; he was an only child and of English descent. He was married in North Carolina to Penelopy Babb, and was the father of twelve children, and died in 1851.
Our subject attended the common schools and at the age of thirteen entered the military school at Chapel Hill. Remaining three sessions he then worked in a dry goods store in Raleigh for some time, and in 1844 came to Tennessee, and lived with his uncle, Burrell Babb, four years. He then returned to Raleigh, N. C., for one year; then returned to Tennessee and married Lucinda Ellen Doss in 1850; he then purchased some land and settled in Robertson County, where he made his principal business farming until 1869, when he purchased the land where the town of Orlinda now is, and built a fine two-story brick building for a store-house, it being the first building in the place. He then commenced a successful mercantile business. Mr. Crocker has seven children: John A., Eugene L., James M., M. Rozella, Henderson J., Jr., Leonidas L. and Willie L. John A. is now connected [p.1140] with his father in the mercantile business. They keep an excellent stock of general merchandise and have the best business house in this part of the country. Mr. Crocker and all his family are members of the Missionary Baptist Church.
Orlinda is one of the most thriving of the younger villages of the county. The first store-house was built and occupied by H. J. Crocker in 1869. The business interests are now represented by H. J. Crocker & Son, general merchandise; R. E. Moore, drugs; B. L. Wilson & Son, undertaking; Kelly & Clayton, blacksmithing; Sprouce & Beasley and E. L. & J. M. Crocker, tobacco dealers. *Could this be Eugene L & James M. Crocker? The town has a good school, and a church has been completed during the past year.
Black Jack is a small village in the northern part of the county. It was located by Mr. Phillips in 1848, when he built a store-house and dwelling. There are two mercantile firms now doing business there--Samuels & King and Mr. True. Drs. Moore and Brodie are the physicians, and Kelly Bros. the blacksmiths. Crystal Fount Lodge, A. F. & A. M., was organized in 1859 with the following members: John S. Hart, W. M.; T. O. Tarperly, S. W.; J. A. McMillan, J. W.; J. W. Felts, S. D.; John Weir, J. D.; A. C. Cook, treasurer; J. M. Henry, secretary; C. W. Warren, Tyler; Henry Hart, Ed T. Hart, J. Babb, H. J. Crocker, G. W. Featherstone, J. Cheek, J. W. Howse and S. B. Jeringan. The following is a list of the Worshipful Masters since the organization: J. S. Hart, J. A. McMillan, T. O. Tarperly, T. M. Gorham, D. W. C. Randolph, T. J. Willis, J. Q. Ford and Dr. J. E. Moore.

HI,
If you check a copy of the original 1880 census (p. 504b), you will see that all those people that you mentioned are living in the household of E(lijah) L. and Ferribee Lawrence Mills. Ferribee is the sister of John Lawrence who married Martha Crocker. John and Martha Crocker Lawrence had two known children--Ardelia and Sidney. Sidney, listed as a nephew, is living with his Aunt Ferribee. I have been unable to locate either John Lawrence or his daughter Ardelia in the 1880 census. Martha Crocker Lawrence died before the 1870 census. Ardelia had a child in 1876 and family stories place her in Mississippi, but so far I have not found her.
J.D. Sears, listed as Elijah and Ferribee's son was the illegitimate son of Elijah and Margaret Sears. I think that they had several--at least two anyway. According to the story among Sears researchers, Ferribee could not have children and this was likened to the Abraham/ Sarah/Hagar story in the Bible. I'm not sure who Rosianna Sears age 11 is. She is listed as a grandaughter, but certainly cannot be the daughter of J.D. She may well be another child of Elijah and Margaret. Nancy
